The Gunners had been tracking the midfielder for some time, but last summer it looked as if Liverpool had hijacked the move and won the race to sign the then 25-year-old from Real Sociedad. Zubimendi was reportedly pictured in a Liverpool shirt and was about to sign for the Reds until pulling the plug on the deal at the 11th hour. Speaking about it he said: "It wasn't an easy time. I wanted to stay at La Real, but when offers come in, you start thinking about your options. The first question I had to answer was whether I wanted to leave – and it wasn't the right time. "I felt La Real offered me more opportunities and that I still had a lot to learn, so staying was the best decision." Zubimendi spent another season with Sociedad before Arsenal came back once again and this time it was Mikel Arteta who managed to get the deal done, with the midfielder signing in a £51million deal . Arsenal got one over on Liverpool when they completed the signing of Martin Zubimendi earlier this month.
