Arne Slot gives major Alisson injury update as double Liverpool boost confirmed
Liverpool boss Arne Slot has ruled Alisson Becker out for this weekend's game against Chelsea - but has confirmed that Hugo Ekitike is in contention to play. Both players picked up injuries against Galatasaray mid-week.
The pair were withdrawn during the second-half of the Reds' Champions League defeat on Tuesday evening . Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson was take off shortly after the break and was replaced by Giorgi Mamardashvili.
It was previously reported that the former was expected to miss eight games due to his issue. Summer signing Hugo Ekitike was also taken off shortly after, having picked up his own problem.
Having now had a few days to evaluate both players, Slot has offered an update ahead of this weekend's trip to Chelsea - and it's mixed news.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Slot said: "Alisson is not part of the squad tomorrow and won't travel to Brazil as well with the national team. He will be out for Saturday.
"Hugo [Ekitike] is going to train again today and same can be said for Federico [Chiesa]. Alisson I would be surprised if he's there for first game after international break but we don't know after that. Depends how quickly he can recover."
With Alisson sidelined, Mamardashvili could be in line for his first Premier League appearance for Liverpool since his summer switch from Valencia.

Speaking ahead of the Georgian's potential bow, Slot added: "We knew we were bringing in a very good goalkeeper. When he plays his first game it's the best way of seeing he's adjusted well or not, and we seen against Southampton he adjusted really well to our club which isn't a surprise as he is a quality goalkeeper.
"Now he can do what Caoimh [Kelleher] has had to do so many times in the past by replacing Ali. Concern over Ali? I'm not a doctor so I can't tell you if it's every time the same. I'm mainly interested in how well it's going to take and there are other people in the club who can give you a better answer."
Following the clash with Chelsea, Liverpool then face a break due to the international fortnight. And Slot will certainly be hoping that a few of his injured players can recover.
Liverpool's next game after the international break pits them against bitter rivals Manchester United at Anfield.
