Leeds United £20million transfer left in limbo by Southampton Spygate scandal

The conclusion of Southampton's Spygate inquiry could have significant consequences for Leeds United's transfer ambitions. The Premier League outfit are reportedly eyeing Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney , with the Championship club believed to be holding out for £20million for his signature.

The 23-year-old is set to enter the final year of his deal. However, any potential transfer could well hinge on the verdict handed down to the Saints, who were charged by the EFL for spying on a Middlesbrough training session just two days before the first leg of their play-off semi-final.

The EFL confirmed that a disciplinary hearing would be held on or before Tuesday , with Tonda Eckert's side currently scheduled to face Hull City in the Wembley play-off final on Saturday.

Having secured their Premier League status earlier this month, Leeds will be eager to strengthen their squad, though their pursuit of Hackney could be impacted by the ruling. Should Middlesbrough be reinstated into the play-offs and go on to win promotion, the club may opt to hold onto their prized asset or slap a considerably heftier price tag on him.

Conversely, if the commission rules in Southampton's favour, Middlesbrough could struggle to retain Hackney and would lose much of their bargaining power, potentially leaving Leeds able to land him for considerably less than the original asking price.
