Aston Villa are still basking in the glory of their Europa League victory - but focus has now shifted to strengthening their squad during the summer transfer window. Villa will compete in the Champions League next season after securing fourth place in the Premier League.

Yet the supporters' greatest moment of joy came in Istanbul, where Unai Emery's side thrashed Freiburg 3-0 in the final to claim the club's first major silverware since 1996.

The Spanish boss has overseen a remarkable era of success since his arrival in 2022 and shows no sign of easing off ahead of a pivotal summer . Villa were restricted to a subdued window last year owing to the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) and UEFA's Squad Cost Rules (SCR).

Emery has acknowledged that he hopes the same constraints won't apply this time around as they look to reinforce their ranks ahead of their return to Europe's top table. Speaking to the Express and Star , the 54-year-old said: "We had some troubles at the beginning of the season, which, hopefully, this year we are not going to have.

"How we reacted this season, to finish in the top-five, makes sense of our way here. If we are frustrated and not getting the balance, it is a problem. Of course, we got the balance, myself and the club. But we must also teach our supporters the ambition, and if we are not getting there as well, keep balance."

An ideal beginning to the summer window for Emery would be wrapping up a deal for Real Betis defender Oscar Mingueza. The 27-year-old - a product of Barcelona's academy - is poised to depart Betis on a free transfer when his contract expires, presenting Villa with the perfect chance to pounce and secure their first signing at zero cost.

According to The Telegraph , the Spain international has been on Villa's radar for some time, with the club consistently seeking competition for right-back Matty Cash. Mingueza's versatility across the entire defensive line could make him a superb addition for Emery.

Mingueza may find his greatest opportunities at Villa playing centre-back, with Emery recently opting to deploy Victor Lindelof in midfield alongside Tyrone Mings' ongoing fitness concerns.

The outlet adds that Villa may encounter competition for his signature from Arsenal and Fulham. Villa have already received encouragement in their pursuit of Mingueza in one respect, as Sky Sports reports he is eager to join a Premier League club.

Unlike at least one of his alternative suitors, Villa possess the additional incentive of being able to provide Champions League football – and a side accustomed to success under Emery.

Sky has upgraded its Ultimate TV and Sky Sports bundle to now include HBO Max, Netflix, Disney+, discovery+ and Hayu, as well as 135 channels and full Sky coverage of the Premier League and EFL.
