Chelsea's fifth summer signing 'decided' as World Cup star gets Premier League return

Xabi Alonso hasn't even taken the reins at Chelsea yet but a roster of new recruits is already taking shape ahead of his arrival. And a fifth signing could be unveiled imminently , with all the signs pointing to it being a question of 'when' rather than 'if'.
In line with the club's commitment to signing young talent under Todd Boehly's ownership , Chelsea confirmed back in January 2025 that Corinthians left-back Denner would be joining on July 1 after he turns 18. The following month brought news of Kazakh teenager Dastan Satpaev before Sporting CP winger Geovany Quenda and Strasbourg forward Emmanuel Emegha were also secured.
Yet Emegha almost certainly won't be the last player to make the journey from Strasbourg to Stamford Bridge this summer. Indeed, the arrival of left-sided specialist Valentin Barco could be made official at any moment.
The Argentina prospect, who has been named in Lionel Scaloni's squad for World Cup 2026 , has already confirmed his departure from Chelsea's sister club. And it would appear the former Brighton and Boca Juniors left-back is making the move everyone would expect him to be.

"Today I say goodbye to this club," the youngster recently wrote on social media in a statement confirming his Strasbourg exit. "I always gave everything on the pitch in every game for this shirt. I want to thank my team-mates, who made everything easier for me.
"Liam Rosenior and his staff for the confidence they showed in me and for helping shape me as a player; Gary O'Neil and his staff for understanding me and helping me improve; everyone at the club who supports us every day; and the fans for the love they always gave me. Thank you, Strasbourg."
There's a tendency to assume any transfer activity between Chelsea and Strasbourg, or any other club within the BlueCo network, is simply a matter of convenience. Yet that's not the situation with Barco, whose spell in France has seen him emerge as a genuinely exciting prospect.
Reports as early as April suggested the Blues had already reached an agreement with the player ahead of a summer switch. Given this, it remains unclear what has stopped the deal from being confirmed, though it's difficult to imagine significant complications between two clubs under shared ownership.

The 21-year-old landed on French soil in January 2025 (initially on loan from Brighton) as an out-and-out left-back. Plenty of Chelsea supporters might not rate Rosenior's tactical nous particularly highly these days but it was he who first recognised the qualities that could transform Barco - signed by Strasbourg for a mere £8million - into a midfield option.
Positive news for Marc Cucurella, who might otherwise have worried the South American was set to challenge for his position. On that note, however, Barco's arrival would provide much-needed cover at left-back, particularly as Cucurella will soon have just two years remaining on his west London deal and has previously hinted at a potential departure.
Despite standing at a modest 5'6", Barco, now valued at approximately £30m by Transfermarkt , has flourished in his new midfield role. He's demonstrated a knack for pushing forward and creating chances, ending this campaign with nine assists and three goals across all competitions.
Sky has upgraded its Ultimate TV and Sky Sports bundle to now include HBO Max, Netflix, Disney+, discovery+ and Hayu, as well as 135 channels and full Sky coverage of the Premier League and EFL.
With uncertainty continuing to surround the futures of Argentina colleague Enzo Fernandez and Cole Palmer, Barco represents a shrewd insurance policy at a reasonable price. The Blues could swiftly lose two of their most inventive players this summer if recent speculation proves accurate, making a budget-friendly signing like Barco appear sensible on paper.
That said, it's feasible the Blues picture the youngster reverting to his left-back origins and offering competition for Cucurella after all. It's an added advantage that Barco can also operate higher up the left wing, making him a versatile option Alonso could find himself depending upon sooner rather than later.
