Gyokeres' Legal Battle: Arsenal Target Strikes Back at Sporting

Arsenal are looking forward to the 2025/26 season with high hopes of finally securing the Premier League title after several near misses.

Gunners ' boss Mikel Arteta admitted that the previous season was challenging for his team, considering their usual lofty expectations. Despite clinching another second-place finish in the top flight, Arteta's side fell significantly short of champions Liverpool.

Yet, there is a palpable sense of optimism at the Emirates Stadium, with the belief that the current summer transfer window could usher in the necessary reinforcements to end Arsenal's league title wait. One such new recruit is Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi , who the Basque club were unable to keep due to a €60million (£51m) release clause in his contract.

Brentford skipper Christian Norgaard is another new addition, joining for £15m, along with goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga. Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres looks like he could be the next name through the door .

Gyokeres twist

Gyokeres’ difficult exit from Sporting continues to get even more bitter after he reportedly sent a legal letter to his employers. The 27-year-old forward has been eager to secure his departure and has been prepared to clash with Sporting president Federico Varandas to achieve his goal.

The pair have been exchanging words through the Portuguese media all summer, with the main point of contention being an alleged gentleman's agreement. Gyokeres believes that Varandas had agreed to let him leave if a buyer offered €60m plus €10m, but Varandas has denied that such an agreement ever existed.

In response, Gyokeres has gone on strike and is refusing to participate in pre-season training with Sporting, declaring he will never play for them again. As a result, Sporting have initiated disciplinary action against their striker.

Now, Portuguese publication Record via The Mirror claim that Gyokeres has, via his legal representatives, issued a legal letter in response. It states his case that Varandas is allegedly to blame for his absence because he has gone back on his word.

Gabriel breaks silence on 'offers' to leave

Arsenal defender Gabriel has addressed speculation and a reported offer from Saudi Arabia before signing a new deal.

“I didn’t hear about anything personally, I didn't receive offers," he said via The Sun .

“A lot of people like to say things on the internet. I am focused on Arsenal. That is why I signed the contract that I signed and I am focused on the club.

“We can’t focus on internet rumours. I didn’t lose my focus at any point in time. I am very focused on Arsenal and I have goals to achieve here.

“I have grown a lot on and off the pitch. I worked even harder. I have grown because of the help of my teammates and the manager. I feel like I am on a good level and I would like to continue with this spirit that I have and this direction I am going in.

“There are always things to improve no matter what you do. I try to stay at my level and keep doing what I’ve been doing to improve. One thing I’ve improved is my leadership on the pitch, and also focusing on tactics and things like that.”
