Hull City star's X-rated comment moments after play-off final as Sky Sports forced to apologise

Sky Sports were forced to apologise following Lewie Coyle's X-rated comment during an emotional interview after Hull's 1-0 win over Middlesbrough in the play-off final. The Tigers captain couldn't hide his emotions as he spoke about his late-father moments after captaining his boyhood club to the Premier League .

Oli McBurnie scored a 96th-minute winner to send Hull back to the Premier League for the first-time since 2017, just when the play-off final looked set for extra-time. Solomon Brynn couldn't hold on to a cross from the left and the Scotland was on hand to poke home from close range.

Coyle lost his father, Chris, but he remained at the forefront of his mind throughout the showpiece match at Wembley. By claiming the final place in next season's Premier League, he honoured his late-father and carried the tribute in his post-match interview, taking aim at any doubters throughout his career.

He said: "It's tough, there's just one man (his dad) I celebrate with, he's not with us but I look up to the sky every game, I looked up today, he's with me. I know he's with me, next best thing my family are here that have been here since day one.

"There's probably not many people that would have thought I'd captain a side to the Premier League, even saying it out loud seems a little bit wild, just an honest kid. There's certainly one man that would've believed in me and that's my old man.

"That's all I told myself through the game, he would've been saying, 'you can do it son, f*** them' and I shouldn't of swore, I apologise, I had to get it in there because that's how he spoke. He got us over the line today, I know for a fact he did it."

Pitchside reporter Jonathan Oakes allowed the Hull captain to finish before issuing an apology, he said: "Well said Lewie, we apologise for the language we know apologies are running high."

Meanwhile, after the interview concluded lead presenter David Prutton added: "Just to reiterate, emotions are running very high. Apologies for any bad language you may have heard."

The build-up to Saturday's final was threatened to be overshadowed by the Spygate controversy that rocked English football as Southampton were found guilty of spying on Boro ahead of their semi-final first-leg.

The Saints were thrown out of the competition and expelled having breached English Football League (EFL) regulations and saw their subsequent appeal fail.

It meant that Middlesbrough were reinstated into the playoffs despite losing after extra-time at St Mary's but they couldn't overcome The Tigers.

Ahead of the showpiece, Hull owner Acun Ilical revealed that legal advice had found that they should have been promoted automatically following Southampton's expulsion. Hours before the play-off final, Ilicali threatened the prospect of legal action if they missed out on promotion to Kim Hellberg's side.

He told BBC Humberside: "Our legal team says that we have to go for action, that's for sure. So we have no doubt about it. Here, all we want is justice. If justice is broken, nobody will enjoy football.

"If this action was so big that a team is out of the play-offs, why didn't they let them not play the semi-final, investigate and take Southampton out and put Wrexham in?

"Why is Wrexham out now? Put Wrexham in and continue the competition. For me, an eliminated team {being] put back - also our lawyers say this and that's their opinion too - is an incredibly wrong decision.

"Now I can talk a little more because now the boys are in the stadium and they will not hear me. I didn't want to make their focus disturbed.
