Arne Slot's departure from Liverpool may have been a surprise to some, but behind closed doors, it is claimed some players had already begun to doubt his approach. That's according to reports following his dismissal, with Slot having been relieved of his duties just 12 months after guiding the club to the Premier League title.

The atmosphere at the club could hardly have been more contrasting to 12 months prior. From the title celebrations of May 2025, to the despair of this year's finale, where Slot's Liverpool barely scraped their way into a Champions League qualification spot.

The Athletic reports that questions over Slot's judgement began when the former Liverpool boss chose to use Dominik Szoboszlai at right-back after Conor Bradley suffered a season-ending injury.

Szoboszlai had begun the campaign in excellent form and was among Liverpool's most important players, but there was a belief that repositioning him prevented the Hungarian from being as effective as he could be.

Meanwhile, there was also reportedly a perception that summer recruits were afforded greater leeway than existing squad members.

It's been claimed that the new additions weren't held to the same expectations as others and could deliver below-par performances while retaining their place in the first XI.

Liverpool splashed the cash during the summer transfer window, bringing in the likes of Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak and Jeremie Frimpong, amont others, at a cost of just under £450million.

Despite being widely tipped to retain their title, the 20-time champions stumbled to a fifth-place finish on 60 points - a whopping 24 points short of their triumphant tally from the previous campaign.

Worries within the dressing room stretched beyond results and into tactical matters. It's reported that during the recent defeat to Aston Villa , players were left baffled over their set-piece defensive responsibilities - a weakness the hosts were quick to take advantage of.

An inquiry is said to have taken place in the dressing room, with tensions beginning to surface. Just one week earlier, Slot had been booed off the pitch by the Anfield faithful after a home draw against a Chelsea side that ultimately finished 10th in the table.

It was evident the supporters had turned on Slot, and once the atmosphere turns in a negative way, regaining control becomes an uphill battle.

Ultimately, the end was inevitable for the former Feyenoord boss, who was informed of his departure one week after the final fixture of the Premier League season.

Sky has upgraded its Ultimate TV and Sky Sports bundle to now include HBO Max, Netflix, Disney+, discovery+ and Hayu, as well as 135 channels and full Sky coverage of the Premier League and EFL.
