Leeds United's recruitment push is starting to gather momentum as Daniel Farke looks to build upon a promising debut campaign back in the top flight. The Whites secured their Premier League status comfortably, finishing 14th last season.

However, Farke is keen to ensure his side sidestep any second-season wobble, with bolstering the defence understood to be the club's primary focus this summer. Leeds are actively in the market for a new goalkeeper and a left-back to provide stronger competition, while the hunt for a new centre-back has grown even more urgent following the exit of Pascal Struijk.

The fan favourite departed Elland Road for Brighton last month in a deal worth an initial £18million, with Leeds compelled to sanction the sale before 30 June to ensure they remained compliant with the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). In a statement, Leeds said: "Last summer, the decision was taken to keep all players at Elland Road to give the club the best possible chance of Premier League survival, with the expectation that player sales would be needed to remain PSR compliant over a three-year accounting window ending June 30.

"The club's higher than expected 14th place finish and run to the Emirates FA Cup semi-final vindicated this decision, with the increased income and single sale of Struijk ensuring the club remains within PSR limits."

Struijk's departure leaves a considerable gap in Farke's defence, having featured in 34 league matches last season and proved instrumental in the club's survival bid. Even prior to the Dutchman's departure, another central defender sat high on Leeds' recruitment list following Farke's effective mid-season tactical shift from a back four to a 3-5-2 system.

One candidate who appears perfectly suited to that setup is Borussia Monchengladbach centre-back Nico Elvedi. The highly-regarded 29 year old has caught the eye for Switzerland at this summer's World Cup and would deliver a vital mix of physicality, leadership and experience to Elland Road.

Capable as the central anchor or on the right of a back three, Elvedi proved a dominant figure in the Bundesliga last season, racking up an impressive 271 clearances across 33 league outings. Standing at 6ft 2in, he appears ideally built for the physical rigours of the Premier League and Farke's favoured approach.

He would also offer superior value compared to some of Leeds' other rumoured targets, with Southampton reportedly demanding an eye-watering £30m for Shea Charles despite the Northern Ireland international having just one year remaining on his contract. According to the Mail, Leeds have already made contact with Monchengladbach to explore a deal for Elvedi, with a fee around €12m (£10m) likely sufficient to secure the defender's services.

The final component of Farke's defensive rebuild would be a new goalkeeper after Illan Meslier's departure and the uncertainty surrounding Karl Darlow. A problematic position for the Whites in recent seasons, Japan international Zion Suzuki appears a perfect candidate to assume responsibilities between the posts following another outstanding World Cup showing.

According to reports in Japan , Leeds have already reached personal terms with the Parma shot-stopper, with a transfer valued at approximately £25m appearing probable. A quick deal would finally resolve the uncertainty over the number one jersey, with Darlow out of contract but still undecided on whether he will prolong his stay in Yorkshire.

Leeds United dream defence for the 2026/27 season: Zion Suzuki; Jayden Bogle, Joe Rodon, Jaka Bijol, Nico Elvedi, Gabriel Gudmundsson.
