Michael Carrick has previously revealed how he channelled the anguish of relegation with West Ham United to secure a dream move, amid reports linking Jarrod Bowen to Manchester United . The new United manager endured the same ordeal during his spell with the Hammers but has argued that the setback spurred him on to reach new heights at Old Trafford.

Bowen has been linked with a switch to United following West Ham's relegation to the Championship. The Hammers skipper was powerless to keep the club in the top flight, despite netting nine goals and contributing 11 assists.

United are amongst a number of clubs rumoured to be pursuing the England international . However, The Sun has reported that West Ham are determined to retain Bowen as they attempt to secure an immediate return to the Premier League .

United boss Carrick confronted a similar dilemma after suffering relegation with the same side in 2003. The 44 year old spent a campaign in the second division before transferring to Tottenham Hotspur and ultimately joining United. The experience had a profound impact on Carrick, who harnessed those emotions to drive his ambition to flourish at Old Trafford. "I was relegated with West Ham and you never forget that," Carrick told The Guardian in 2014. "Going down, playing in the Championship, I constantly remind myself of that. I still remember the feeling, without doubt, I wouldn't allow myself to forget it."

"Those are the things that drive you on, that end up making you stronger. We have enjoyed a lot of success at Manchester United but each season has had its ups and downs.

"There have been certain times here through the years when we have had, say, two bad results on the spin and the roof caves in. You think everything is wrong but we have still gone on to achieve things."

Given Carrick's assessment of his own playing days, Bowen would join a fresh club with even greater determination to flourish following relegation heartbreak. And with Carrick having endured a comparable experience himself, a move to United could prove ideal for Bowen.

West Ham are said to require approximately £100million from offloading players, which might boost United's prospects of finalising a deal. The 29 year old has four years remaining on his Hammers deal and has acknowledged that transfer rumours will be unavoidable as he discussed his future on the season's final day.

"I'm under contract here," Bowen said. "I've been here six and a half years, I've had some really high moments, and this is a low moment that will outweigh everything.

"There's going to be rumours, there's going to be talk. Ultimately, what I see is getting this club back in the Premier League because that is where it deserves to be."

It remains uncertain whether Bowen will emulate Carrick's example and remain loyal to West Ham this summer. Despite being part of a relegated squad, Bowen would thrive at a club competing towards the summit of the table.
