Gabriel Jesus is determined to stay at Arsenal and see out his contract.

There is heavy interest in the Arsenal striker, who only has one year left on his contract which has alerted clubs in Italy and Spain. Jesus’ contract situation has also alerted clubs in his native Brazil because the 29-year-old’s appearances have been limited this season.

But Jesus, who first joined Manchester City in 2017, wants to stay at Arsenal and a factor in the decision is that his British citizenship will be issued this year. Brazil international Jesus wants to play and knows there is interest but still loves Arsenal and is in no mood to push to leave despite being linked with moves.

And while his status is a factor, he also wants to write some Premier League history and is taking that very seriously. He has had four years at Arsenal and wants to see out his contract.

Jesus wants to become the Brazilian to have scored the most goals in Premier League history and he currently has 79 while Roberto Firmino finished on 82. With another year at Arsenal, the chances are high that Jesus could break that record and go down in history. He would also be an extremely attractive option as a free agent.

It remains to be seen what Arsenal do this summer and they may look to shake up their strike force with Jesus and Kai Havertz competing with Viktor Gyokeres. But Jesus is in no rush to leave and even talked about his future to ESPN Brazil last weekend when he scored in Arsenal’s game at Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Jesus told ESPN: “There’s a lot of talk [about the future] and I’m being very honest. It’s not easy for a player who is always looking to improve and help on the field with what’s happening. But like I said, I’m very respectful, I have a lot of respect for the coach, and especially my teammates.

“I made my contribution when I came back. Many thought I would return calmly, that it would take longer. But, from the first Champions League game , I came back with everything, without any doubt, and played most of the games. It’s not easy mentally, but I was resilient and respected the coach.

“The future belongs to God. I still have a year left on my contract with Arsenal. I want to play, I want to prove to myself that I can play at a high level.

“Today [against Palace], I could have scored two or three more goals. This shows me that I’m still a player who can perform at a high level even with such a serious injury. I have my head in the right place, I think every day about how to keep my head in the right place, train hard and stay focused.”
