Olmo: Barca's Smart Signings Outshine Madrid's Big Spree

Barcelona midfielder Dani Olmo has stirred the rivalry pot with a bold statement ahead of the 2025/26 season.

Speaking to the COPE , Olmo confidently claimed, “We have made better signings than Real Madrid. We have also strengthened ourselves.”

His remark has sparked debate, but a closer look at the numbers and strategies behind both clubs’ transfer business this summer shows there’s substance behind his confidence.

Barcelona’s approach has been targeted and strategic. They signed Joan Garcia from Espanyol by triggering his €25 million release clause, securing a young, talented Spanish goalkeeper with long-term potential.

They also landed Roony Bardghji from Copenhagen for just €2.5 million, a bargain for a rising star known for his flair and creativity.

That brings Barça’s total spending to just €27.5 million, but each signing directly addresses squad needs. Lastly, they also signed Marcus Rashford, albeit on loan without a fee.

Real Madrid, by contrast, have gone big. They brought in Dean Huijsen from Bournemouth for around €59.5 million and Franco Mastantuono from River Plate for a reported €63.2 million.

In addition, they completed a €6-10 million early registration deal for Trent Alexander-Arnold and paid approximately €50 million for Alvaro Carreras from Benfica. Their total outlay nears €130–140 million.

Despite the spending gap, Barcelona’s signings seem more cost-effective and calculated. They filled gaps without compromising financial stability, while Real Madrid’s high spending carries a higher risk.

“All teams make changes in the transfer window, and we don’t mind them signing or adding players. We have to focus on our own,” he added.

From Olmo’s perspective, it is not about quantity or headlines. Rather, it is about strengthening smartly. In that sense, Barcelona may well have had the better transfer window.
