Thomas Tuchel might just have given Man Utd the green light for ideal summer signing

Out of sight, out of mind. It's the golden rule of modern football, and nobody understands it better than Ivan Toney .

When the former Brentford striker left for Al-Ahli two years ago, he essentially vanished from the minds of Premier League supporters. One moment, he was among the most sought-after strikers in England; the next, he was just one small part of the Saudi Arabian spending spree.

But football has a peculiar way of turning on its heels. And courtesy of Thomas Tuchel , Toney could be suddenly rocketing back into Manchester United's thinking.

Tuchel's choice to give Toney a surprise England World Cup call-up is precisely the sort of curveball that makes the sport gloriously unpredictable. For Toney, it's a career reprieve. For United, it could prove the ultimate transfer opportunity wrapped in a Three Lions package.

Let's face it, United's striking options still require some work this summer. Yes, they brought in Benjamin Sesko , and yes, the Slovenian has been performing just fine. He has demonstrated glimpses of the considerable potential that persuaded the club to secure his signature.

But 'fine' won't propel you back to the top. At present, Sesko appears to be a young forward who could benefit from genuine competition - somebody to elevate him to the next tier and share the goalscoring responsibility, without entirely derailing his progression as the long-term first-choice No. 9.

United don't require another £70million superstar to obstruct Sesko's pathway - or even worse, another Rasmus Hojlund festering away like an absurdly expensive wheel of cheese you haven't got the heart to bin. They require a seasoned, clinical alternative. They require an Ivan Toney.

Normally, proposing that United sign a striker from the Saudi Pro League would spark a fan revolt of epic proportions. Old Trafford would justifiably rebel at the notion of recruiting someone from a division where the defensive rigour can resemble a Sunday league shambles.

But this is where Tuchel has handed United the ideal opportunity.

The World Cup is the ultimate perception changer. If Toney remains out in Saudi, a switch to United is a PR catastrophe. But if he slots in a goal or two in North America this summer, the entire narrative shifts in an instant.

Suddenly, he isn't a Saudi exile - he's England's decisive impact substitute. The outcry vanishes, replaced by a chorus of supporters urging the club to seal the transfer. Tuchel is essentially offering United the perfect buffer against a hostile fan response.

He's shouldering the gamble so they don't have to. And let's not fool ourselves that Toney has lost his scoring touch. He's been finding the net with ease out there - 72 in 93 matches - just as he did for Brentford prior to his departure when England's top clubs were circling with genuine interest.

He remains a proven Premier League goalscorer, and as a summer market prospect, this looks like an absolute no-brainer. Toney would likely prove a highly cost-effective, value-for-money acquisition. He addresses United's immediate crisis - delivering instant goals, physical strength and attacking depth - without causing a single long-term complication.

He wouldn't obstruct Sesko's route to becoming the main striker, nor would his transfer fee stop INEOS from pursuing another world-class talent in a year or two should the chance emerge.

It's the low-risk, high-reward signing United have let slip through their fingers too often before. They simply needed someone to bridge the gap and convince the supporters.
