Sunderland will aim to climb back into the top half and keep their European push on track when they visit already-relegated Wolves at Molineux on Saturday.

The bookies have the Black Cats down as the slight favourites at 23/20 with BetGoodwin while Championship-bound Wolves are 11/5 with William Hill to end their season on a relative high-note and a draw is 23/10 with Sky Bet . Wolves are playing for pride after their drop to the Championship was confirmed earlier this month. Since a 2-1 home win over Liverpool and a 2-2 draw with Brentford in March, Rob Edwards’s side have lost three straight games against West Ham, Leeds and Tottenham without scoring, going down 1-0 to Spurs last weekend.

The Old Gold have managed just 24 league goals and have failed to score in 18 of their 34 matches, the most in the division. They are now looking to edge above 19th-placed Burnley, with only three points separating the sides, and to avoid finishing bottom. Wolves have also lost all four league matches against promoted teams this season, although they are unbeaten in seven home league games against Sunderland.

Sunderland, meanwhile, are looking to respond after last week’s 5-0 home loss to Nottingham Forest - their heaviest home league defeat in almost 70 years. Four goals went in inside 37 minutes, prompting Regis Le Bris to warn that even a small drop in standards can be punished.

That defeat, following a seven-goal thriller loss at Aston Villa, means Sunderland have conceded nine goals in their last two matches, and they have slipped to 12th. Even so, they remain close to the European places, sitting three points behind seventh-placed Bournemouth with four games left.

Wolves are without Sam Johnstone (shoulder) and Enso Gonzalez (knee), while Ladislav Krejci will be assessed for a neck issue. Yerson Mosquera returns from suspension and is expected to rejoin Santiago Bueno and Toti Gomes in a back three. Tolu Arokodare and Hwang Hee-chan are pushing for starts, but Adam Armstrong is likely to lead the line again.

Sunderland are still missing Romaine Mundle (hamstring), but Bertrand Traore, Jocelin Ta Bi and Nilson Angulo could return to the squad. Reinildo Mandava and Chemsdine Talbi are options for changes, though the Xhaka–Sadiki–Diarra midfield is expected to stay. Up front, Brian Brobbey is favoured over Wilson Isidor.
